Sclerotherapy is a safe, time-tested treatment for eliminating spider veins. AMARA – Aesthetic Surgery and Dermatology in Venice, Florida, specializes in providing minimally invasive vein treatments that help patients feel confident in their skin again.
While the in-office procedure is quick and requires little downtime, proper aftercare is necessary to heal comfortably and achieve the best results.
Here’s what you need to know to take care of your skin after sclerotherapy—from the first day through the following weeks.
What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment for eliminating visible veins, including spider veins (small, thread-like red or blue veins close to the surface of the skin).
During the procedure, a fine needle is used to inject a sclerosant solution into the targeted vein. The solution irritates the vein lining, causing it to collapse and eventually be absorbed by your body. Over time, the treated vein fades from view.
In our clinic, sclerotherapy sessions typically take about 20–30 minutes and have no anesthesia. Most patients return to normal activities shortly afterward.
What to Expect After Treatment
You may experience some minor side effects following your session. These can include:
- Temporary redness or swelling at the injection site
- Mild bruising or discoloration
- Small red blood vessels (matting)
- Slight itching or sensitivity
These reactions are typically short-lived and resolve on their own within a few days to weeks. More serious complications—such as blood clots or infections—are rare, especially when aftercare instructions are followed closely. Read more about what your skin can tell about your overall health.
Sclerotherapy Aftercare: What to Do
To promote healing and reduce the risk of complications, follow these important post-treatment guidelines:
1. Wear Compression Stockings
Your provider will recommend medical-grade compression stockings, which should be worn for 3 to 7 days. These garments help support circulation, reduce swelling, and prevent blood from pooling in the treated veins.
Tip: Generic drugstore compression wear may not be strong enough—ask us for proper guidance if you’re unsure.
2. Walk Daily
Walking is encouraged immediately after your procedure and in the days that follow. It helps keep your blood moving and reduces the risk of clotting. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes a day, at a comfortable pace.
3. Avoid Heat & Direct Sunlight
For the first 48 hours, avoid:
- Hot showers, baths, saunas, or whirlpools
- Direct sun exposure or tanning beds
These can dilate blood vessels and increase the risk of pigmentation or irritation.
4. Stay Away From Certain Medications
Avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil®), or other anti-inflammatory drugs for 48 hours, unless instructed otherwise. These can interfere with the sclerosing solution or increase bruising. Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) is generally safe to take if you need pain relief.
5. Don’t Shave or Apply Lotion
Avoid shaving or applying lotions to the treated area for a few days to prevent irritation. Stick to gentle cleansers and lukewarm water when washing.
6. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water helps your body flush out the injected solution and reduces inflammation. Proper hydration also supports healthy circulation.
How Long Until I See Results?
While some patients notice an improvement within a few weeks, it can take several weeks to several months for treated veins to fade completely. Spider veins typically respond within 3 to 6 weeks.
Sclerotherapy is highly effective, but multiple sessions may be needed depending on the number and size of veins being treated.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
You may be a strong candidate for sclerotherapy if:
- You have bothersome spider veins
- You’re in good overall health and able to walk daily after treatment
- You are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
